Suspect in critical but stable condition after shooting involving officer in Cathedral City

A suspect is in critical but stable condition after an officer shot him during an investigation Friday, according to the Cathedral City Police Department.

Officers responded to a shooting at a home in the 27-100 block of Shadowcrest Lane that was reported around 2:40 p.m., Cathedral City Police said in a news release. The person who reported the incident told them that she heard four gunshots and that one of the panes of her glass door had been smashed.

Police said Cathedral City resident Benjamin Scott Cohen, 38, is being considered a suspect. Cohen arrived at the scene in his vehicle while officers were there, which is when the shooting involving an officer occurred. Police recovered a weapon from the scene and the press release did not say whether or not Cohen shot the officer.

Cohen was then taken to the Desert Regional Medical Center. The department did not identify the officer involved in the shooting, but said he was a seven-year law enforcement veteran who was uninjured and will be placed on leave. administration during the investigation of the incident.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Force Investigation Detail is investigating the shooting involving an officer.
