In a surprise move Tuesday night, Frederick County commissioners rejected Planning Commission Chairman Richard Floyd’s candidacy for another term. Instead, they appointed Frederick farmer J. Denham Crum and Monrovia resident Joan McIntyre, who has a background in construction, to five-year terms. Mr Floyd said on Tuesday night that the commissioners were “stacking the commission with the developers” and that is why he was sacked for a new term. Mr. Floyd is an environmental engineer.

When Mark Hoke turned off the lights and closed the door to his third-floor office in Winchester Hall in December, he said he wouldn’t regret not renewing his term as Frederick County Commissioner. Mr Hoke, who has been chairman of the commissioners for the past four years, said he was tired of politics.

Six Frederick County firefighters boarded a US Air flight to Orlando, Florida on Tuesday night for a two-week stay, helping the state beleaguered by stubborn wildfires. Wildfires have destroyed nearly half a million acres in drought-stricken Florida since Memorial Day, with damage concentrated in Flagler, Volusia and Brevard counties.
