Trevor Story began his rehab assignment at Double-A Portland on Friday and passed his first test with flying colors.

The Boston Red Sox infielder, returning to the field after recovering from elbow surgery in the offseason, started at shortstop for the Sea Dogs. He made his presence felt in the five rounds he contested.

Story scored seven pitches on his first at-bat and then scored on a triple touchdown by top Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer. He flew into his second AB, but capped his night with a smashed three-run homer on the left-field wall at Hadlock Field.

Story finished the 1-on-2 game with the home run, the walk, two runs scored and three RBIs.

As for how Story fared defensively, the two-time All-Star lined up the ball cleanly on the ground that was hit to him to complete the third inning.

Story will continue his rehab assignment as the designated hitter on Saturday, then play five more innings at shortstop on Sunday.
