This year’s BET Awards made sure to pay tribute to hip hop’s 50th anniversary, which sparked celebrations across the world for much of 2023. Live from Los Angeles, attendees and viewers were treated to appearances like Big Daddy Kane, Warren G, E-40, MC Lyte, Lil Uzi Vert and many more, all broken down on the show by segments. The finale reminded all who witnessed specific moments in the culture’s diverse history, from Kid ‘N Play’s iconic choreography to Soulja Boy’s viral “Crank That” dance.

One of the biggest moments came courtesy of relative newcomer GloRilla, who delivered a spirited rendition of her latest single, “Lick Or Sum,” from a stage that looked like a pair of giant lips. “I call that nigga ‘bruh’, his mama ain’t my mama, and stop calling me sis, I’m tryna fuck your baby daddy, get fucked by his cousin too, I keep him in the family , he bends me like a pretzel, I’m his Aunt Annie,” she rapped.

Before the big event, BET Executive Vice President of Specials, Music Programming and Music Strategy Connie Orlando explained what viewers can expect via a press release. “We have an incredible lineup of artists who will take us on a musical journey, spanning hip hop spanning all decades, styles and regions,” she said. “From music to dance and fashion, we delve into every crate as we celebrate 50 years of hip hop and its diversity, evolution and global impact.”
