SWAT clears home area of ​​Dayton after more than 12-hour standoff

Law enforcement officers, including a SWAT team, surrounded a Dayton home for more than 12 hours, believing a suspect was inside the residence Sunday afternoon until late evening.

UPDATE at 1:41 a.m. ET, May 29:

Dayton police, assisted by other tactical units, began their standoff just before noon in the 200 block of Alaska Street following reports of a burglary in progress.

Officers later revealed that a woman’s ex-husband was trying to break into her home, which was caught on security cameras. The husband violated a temporary protective order against him by attempting to approach his divorcing wife, said Maj. Christopher Malson, operations support commander and critical incident commander for the Dayton Police Department.

Law enforcement officers believed he was inside the home they were at an impasse with after speaking to him on the phone.

The police tried to pull her out of the house for more than 12 hours.

The standoff originally occurred because the husband had a history of weapons and violent crime, which prompted a response from the SWAT team.

However, shortly after midnight on Monday, they discovered the man was not inside the house at all. Officers believed he left the house before police arrived on the scene.

No hostages were taken during the clash and no one was injured.

Detectives continued to follow her whereabouts and review any charges that may be leveled against the ex-husband. So far, he could face break and enter charges in addition to violations of protective order charges. No information was given as to whether the husband would receive more charges for the hours-long standoff.

Police were called to the 200 block of Alaska Street to a report of an ongoing burglary, according to the Montgomery County regional breakdown.

Taylor Robertson of News Center 7 was on the scene throughout the afternoon and evening on Sunday.

SWAT entered the house just after 10 p.m. Sunday evening.

Robertson also spoke with neighbors who have seen all of this happen where they live.

News Center 7 cameras watched as SWAT fired multiple tear gas canisters at the Alaska Street home.

It all started before noon Sunday when Dayton police responded to reports of a burglary in progress, according to Montgomery County dispatchers.

A female victim called 911 claiming that while she was at church she saw her husband breaking into her home.

“So I’m in Troy right now, I have a security camera,” she told dispatchers. “I have a TPO (Temporary Protective Order) against my husband and he just broke into my house.”

“Is she inside right now?” The dispatchers asked.

“Yes, he’s inside right now,” she replied.

Robertson also spoke with neighbors on Sunday who saw what happened.

“I happened to hear all this commotion,” Curtis Ford said. “So I’m walking down the street, look here, there’s about five or six police cars.”

He lives just down the block and says he was at home when police first pulled over and watched as crews tried to get the man out.

“The cops were telling the guy, I’m not sure of his name, but he was telling him to get out,” Ford told Robertson. “We’re not going anywhere, we need to get you help. It scares you a little.

Kayden Noble reached out to the woman at the center of the standoff.

“I asked her if she wanted any help today like doing anything but she was like I was in church then after that I checked on her and she said that ‘there were cops at our house and then that was it,’ she said.

News Center 7 is working with Dayton police to confirm the man’s name and the type of charges he may face.

Taylor Robertson of News Center 7 is on the scene. She reports that officers tell the male suspect he is under arrest and order him out of the house.

SWAT launched two rounds of smoke bombs towards the house.

Robertson spoke to a person who lives down the block who saw when police first arrived on the scene.

“I happened to hear all this commotion, so I’m walking down the street and looking here, there’s about five or six police cars,” Curtis Ford said. “That scares you a little.”
