When they got to the scene, officers tried to talk to the suspect, who began shooting at them.

Officers fired back, shooting the suspect.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital where he later died.

According to police, the investigation determined that the suspect carjacked a woman at a nearby Texaco and then got into a crash with a semi-truck a few blocks away. The suspect then waved the gun at the semi-driver before getting into a shootout with police.

Channel 2′s Michel Doudna spoke with investigators and witnesses during WSB Tonight at 11 p.m.

The sound of the crash disturbed the quiet afternoon.

Glenn and Annette heard it all as a Chevy Malibu collided with a semi-truck in the middle of Jonesboro Road.

“I heard the truck go by, and I heard his wheels screeching. Screeching like crazy,” they said.

Investigators said the man was armed with two handguns at the corner of Jonesboro and Main Street where police caught up.

“Where there was a collision. The suspect exited the vehicle with a handgun, pointed it at the driver, and began to walk down the roadway,” investigators said.
