Suspect accused of shooting, carjacking mail carrier in western NC taken into custody

A man accused of shooting a mail carrier and stealing her vehicle in western North Carolina has been arrested.

The original incident occurred on Tuesday in Madison County and involved a chase along Interstate 40 that ended along Williams Road, just south of Morganton.

Channel 9′s Dave Faherty spoke with neighbors, who said they had been told to stay in their homes.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office told Faherty the suspect is wanted for a felonious assault in Madison County.

Early Wednesday morning, Burke County 911 announced that the suspect had been taken into custody.

Due to the incident, Burke County Public Schools announced that several schools in the area would be operating on a two-hour delay.

Those schools include Salem Elementary School, Mull Elementary School, Liberty Middle School, North Liberty School, and Robert L. Patton High School.
