Police heard gunshots in response to unrest in downtown Charlotte; the shot man is dead.

A man shot dead in downtown Charlotte on Thursday died in a hospital, and police said they had one person in custody before they even found the 26-year-old victim.

Police found Martell Lavelle Davis with gunshot wounds in the 300 block of North Brevard Street just after 2:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Davis was pronounced dead in hospital on Friday, police said.

Officers were in the area when they were flagged for a disturbance, heard a gunshot and saw a man with a gun running away, the CMPD said.

Officers arrested the man without incident, then found a man, later identified as Davis, who had been shot.

Police arrested Brandon Carteea Allen, 35, who was initially charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill causing serious bodily harm and discharging a firearm within bounds from the city.

After Davis’ death, the charges were changed to first degree murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied property.

Police have not said what they believe caused the shooting or whether Davis and Allen knew each other.

The CMPD urged anyone with information about the shooting to call the Homicide Unit at 704-432-8477 or Crime Stoppers’ Anonymous Tip Line at 704-334-1600.
