PGA Championship rain delay rules and weather forecast Saturday

The weather may be the leader while everyone else stays in the clubhouse on Saturday.

The PGA Championship opened with a frost delay. Up to a half inch of rain is expected for the third round, so the tournament could pull a Tom Kim and get stuck in the mud on moving day.

Welcome to Rochester. At least it’s not snowing in May. Which totally happens.

Rain will begin Saturday morning just before the first pairing is scheduled to tee off and could last all day. Temperatures will meander into the low 60s.

The Sunday forecast is sunny with a high of 73 degrees.

Then Rochester will smirk with a week of near-perfect weather after the fanfare, production trucks and world’s best golfers leave town.

Here’s what happens if the inclement weather horn sounds at Oak Hill Country Club and there’s a delay on Saturday:

How many types of PGA Tour weather delays are there

Two. There is a normal suspension or immediate suspension.

An immediate suspension is indicated with a single extended horn sound which indicates there is immediate danger. That isn’t likely to happen this weekend.

A normal suspension is signaled with three consecutive horns. Players can choose to finish the hole they’re on or stop playing. A player may not begin a new hole. There are two short horn sounds when play resumes.

What is water pooling on the PGA Tour

A rain delay has just as much to do with water drainage as current precipitation conditions. If water pools on fairways or greens, there is more likely to be a normal suspension. Rain delays could also be activated when players have difficulty gripping clubs or their feet are slipping when hitting the ball.

What do players do with their golf ball during a delay

During a normal suspension, a golfer must mark their ball with a marker. If the weather elements move the marker, the player is required to put the ball back in its original location before play resumes.

If there is lightning, a golfer can leave the course without picking up or marking their ball.

When does a PGA Tournament finish if there’s a rain delay

When play resumes later in the day or the next day, golfers may play 36 holes in one day. If a tournament can’t finish 72 holes through Sunday, the tournament could extend into Monday or even Tuesday.
