No charges yet in fatal Johnston County shooting

William Ronnie Oliver Jr., 47, was shot fatally in the town of Princeton in Johnston County on May 17, 2023, according to Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide that happened Wednesday evening in the small town of Princeton.

Authorities say Joe Mitchell, 73, of Wayne County, called 911 to report that he had shot a man during an altercation..

Sheriff’s deputies arrived at a home on Progressive Church Road and found 47-year-old William Ronnie Oliver Jr. dead at the scene, according to a news release. Oliver lived at the address were he was found.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office to investigate the shooting.

No criminal charges have been filed against Mitchell as of mid-afternoon Thursday.
