Nicolas Coster, Lionel Lockridge of Santa Barbara, dead at 89

Soap vet Nicolas Coster, best known for his role as Lionel Lockridge on the now defunct NBC soap opera St. Barbara, died Monday evening. He was 89 years old.

“There is great sadness in my heart tonight, my father actor Nicolas Coster passed away in Florida at 9:01 p.m. in hospital,” Coster’s daughter, Dinneen Coster, shared on Facebook. “Please be inspired by his artistic achievements and know that he was a real actor! I will remember him as always doing his best and as a wonderful father. Rest in peace.”

Coster’s daytime career included stints on now-defunct soap operas Young Doctor Malone, The Secret Storm, Somerset, Another World, As the World Turns, One Life to Live And All my children.

But it was his turn as the patriarch of the very wealthy Lockridge family, Lionel, on St. Barbara Coster will be remembered forever. He played the character on and off throughout the beloved series from 1984 to 1993, earning four Daytime Emmy nominations in the process. He would eventually win his first Daytime Emmy in 2017 for his role as Mayor Jack Madison on the digital soap opera The Bay.

Coster has also starred in dozens of primetime shows, including wonder womanCharlie’s Angels, Buck Rogers, Magnum IP, TJ Hooker And Star Trek: The Next Generation. He notably reoffended on The facts of life as Blair Warner’s father of Lisa Whelchel.

Coster’s film work included a supporting role in the 1976s All the President’s Men.

“It was an honor to work at a company with him, and I will always treasure his friendship and his strengths as a professional,” Coster wrote. St. Barbara costar A Martinez on Facebook early Tuesday. “He once gave me this very helpful advice: ‘What you choose to do with a scene doesn’t have to be the likely thing. You can choose any course imaginable – no matter how unlikely – as long as it’s possible.
