The next time an NBA player falls to the ground in pain, you better not pretend. The NBA competition committee is reportedly considering a penalty in play for flopaccording to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Players who indulge on the flop would be charged with a technical foul, according to the report.

The proposal isn’t official yet, and there’s no timeline on when it would be enacted into law if approved, although it looks like things could move quickly. The league could test the policy in Summer League games, which begin in July.

The flop continues to be a major source of debate in the league. Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr summed up the problem well, charitably calling the practice “the game’s mandate” in one sentence, before calling another game a “flagrant flop” moments later. . Kerr made the comments after the Warriors’ Game 4 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals.

The Lakers and LeBron James weren’t happy with that, saying the team wasn’t practicing on the flop. James has been called out for flopping in the past, although he is far from the only superstar player in practice.

The NBA competition committee resolved a similar issue in 2021, cracking down on non-basketball movement fouls. This change was made to prevent players like James Harden from committing fouls while intentionally making contact during shots.
