A California judge on Monday ordered suspected UC-Davis stabber Carlos Dominguez to undergo a psychiatric exam.
Dominguez, a former student at the school, is accused of a string of deadly slayings which left two people dead and one hospitalized in critical condition. He was arrested earlier this month and charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
During a hearing in Yolo County Superior Court, a court-appointed public defender said Dominguez was not competent to stand trial. The 21-year-old suspect told the court he did not want an attorney, according to the Sacramento Bee.
“I’d like to take it myself, if possible,” he said after rising from his seat.
A competency hearing was scheduled for June.
Yolo County Sheriff’s deputies led Dominguez out of the courtroom after the hearing concluded.
Police have still not released a motive for the stabbings, which started soon after Dominguez left the school and put residents of the sleepy college town on edge for several days. A third-year student studying biological science, Dominguez was kicked out of the school for academic reasons.
The first two victims of the attacks, unhoused man David Henry Breaux and UC-Davis student Karim Abou Najm, died. The third victim, unhoused woman Kimberlee Guillory — who was attacked in her tent — survived.
Dominguez was arrested after more than three dozen people reported seeing a person matching a suspect description in Sycamore Park, the same area where the second attack occurred.
A number of relatives of Najm, the second victim, attended the hearing wearing T-shirts with the man’s image.
