Inmate sent to hospital after latest stabbing at Richland County Jail

In the latest in a series of violent attacks inside the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, an inmate was stabbed multiple times on Sunday.

An inmate inside the jail was stabbed by another inmate with an “improvised stabbing instrument,” a press release from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said. The deputies were summoned to jail around 3:30 p.m., the statement said.

The unidentified victim was taken to hospital with multiple upper body injuries. Neither the name nor the condition of the detainee was disclosed.

The knife attack is under investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

Earlier this month, two inmates needed medical attention after two separate stabbing incidents. In May, seven inmates were hospitalized following violent attacks in the prison.

The Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, operated by Richland County, has come under intense scrutiny in recent years due to severe understaffing, violence inside the jail, and reports of poor conditions for detainees. Four people died in the prison between February 2022 and January 2023.
