Inmate injured at Richland County Jail for third time in as many days, deputies say

For the third time in as many days, an inmate at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center was injured in a violent incident, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.

After consecutive days of inmates being taken to hospital after being stabbed inside the jail, another inmate was injured in a fight Saturday, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. .

Around noon, deputies responded to reports of an assault at Columbia Jail, the statement said.

Deputies found that several inmates fought in the prison’s medical dorm and a 35-year-old man locked up in the prison was taken to an area hospital for treatment. No further information on the inmate’s condition was available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word on the number of inmates involved in the fight, or the motive for the violence.

No arrests were reported by the sheriff’s department, which continues to investigate the fight, in addition to two stabbings at the jail on Thursday and Friday.

Attacks this week

In Thursday’s stabbing attack, a 29-year-old man, held at the prison, was found with a laceration and knot over his right eye and swelling all over his face around 11 p.m., the department said. of the sheriff.

The inmate also suffered a 2-inch stab wound to the lower leg, as well as multiple other cuts to his right arm and both hands, according to the sheriff’s department.

He was transported to an area hospital for treatment. No further information on his condition was available.

MPs were called to the jail at around 2.45pm on Friday after prison staff reported that two inmates had an argument during recess.

During the fight, a 25-year-old inmate received cuts to his upper body. Three homemade knives were recovered following the attack, according to the sheriff’s department.

Recent problem

There have been other violent incidents in the prison this month. Including the most recent attacks, MPs have reported five stabbing hospitalizations inside the prison so far this month.

On May 11, three inmates at the jail were stabbed in two attacks, according to the sheriff’s department.
