Escambia drive-by shooting investigation underway; ECSO deputy crashed on way to scene

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drive-by shooting that occurred Tuesday night on Ben Sasser Drive.

ECSO spokesperson Morgan Lewis told the News Journal deputies responded to the 7000 block of Ben Sasser Drive after receiving reports that someone was firing a gun from a truck traveling down the street.

“We located several shell casings upon arrival,” Lewis said. “No one was injured and there was no property damage.”

Lewis said an investigation is underway.

After receiving the shots fired call, one of the ECSO deputies hit a driver while one the way to the scene on Patricia Drive, according to Florida Highway Patrol. While the deputy had her lights and sirens activated, a pickup truck attempted to pull into a driveway instead of pulling over and stopping, which is Florida law.

Both drivers received minor injuries, according to the FHP release, and the deputy was transported to a local hospital by EMS. Lewis also confirmed the deputy only sustained minor injuries.

FHP says the driver of the pickup truck was cited for failure to move over.
