After spending the week teasing him on social media with amusing and cryptic posts, the Detroit Lions officially unveiled their new alternate helmets on Wednesday.
The new helmet moves away from the team’s typical silver helmets and instead opts for another of its base colors, Honolulu Blue. The helmet also features the team’s old school Lions logo.
In a teaser video released Wednesday morning of some team members getting a glimpseLions coach Dan Campbell said “I like it. It’s gonna be pretty sharp,” while receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown said “Oooh, that’s good,” and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson added, “That stuff is nice.”

The first signs of the new helmet being revealed this week appeared in a photo tweeted by the team on Monday with a license plate on a blue Mustang simply reading “ALT HMT” and a bumper sticker reading June 21.
Then on Tuesday, the Lions placed the same blue Mustang in the camera frame with a caption saying “tomorrow.”
It was reported in February that the team would not be getting new uniforms in 2023, but adding a new helmet to the mix.
Last year, 13 NFL teams took advantage of NFL rule changes and wore alternative helmets, but the Lions were not one of them. For now, alternate helmets can only be worn with alternate uniforms, which for the Lions are their gray jerseys and pants.
NFL teams are only allowed to change jerseys every five years, and alternate helmets must include a logo from a certain point in the team’s history.
It’s been a while since the Lions unveiled new uniforms and it looks like they could feature in the role, but not this year. The Lions last unveiled new home, away, Color Rush and retro uniforms in 2017, and president Rod Wood told the Free Press in February that they were talking to Nike about releasing new ones. jerseys for 2024.
