In line with the Russian propaganda narrative, China does not call Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine a “war”, but euphemistically calls it “a conflict”.

South Africa supports China’s “peace plan” for a political settlement of the “conflict in Ukraine”, Ramaphosa said, also using the term Kremlin propaganda. He said he hoped to revive Ukrainian-Russian negotiations in the near future.

There were talks between Ukraine and Russia at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine from February 24, 2022, but these quickly stalled.

The African “peacekeeping mission” will take place after a European tour by China’s special envoy on resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine.

African leaders plan to visit Ukraine in early June and want to start peace talks between Ukraine and Russia – even though Russian invasion force troops are still present within Ukraine’s sovereign borders.
