A man dies in Sacramento jail a day after he was booked. He is the fourth inmate found dead in 2023.

A man was found dead on Friday a day after being incarcerated at Sacramento County’s main jail – the fourth inmate to die at the facility this year.

The 37-year-old was taken into custody Thursday by Sacramento County Regional Park rangers on a felony warrant alleging grand theft, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

At around 9 a.m. on Friday, the inmates were released from their cells for recess, according to deputies, who then found the inmate lying on the ground outside his cell door.

After deputies and medical personnel attempted to save lives, the Sacramento City Fire Department arrived and took the inmate to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead by hospital staff.

Homicide detectives are investigating the death, but foul play is not suspected, the news release said.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death and release the man’s name after notifying next of kin.
