59-year-old visitor dies after being pulled from water at Maui snorkeling site

Maui police say a California visitor removed from Honolua Bay on Thursday has died.

At around 8:23 a.m. Thursday, first responders from ocean safety, fire and police responded to Honolua Bay, a popular snorkeling site in West Maui, regarding an unconscious woman in the water. She reportedly went snorkeling before losing consciousness.

Responders brought her ashore and took rescue action, but were unsuccessful.

The victim has been identified as Joan Giuliano, 59, of Lancaster, California.

A preliminary investigation reveals no signs of foul play, police said. An autopsy was scheduled and the case was classified as an unattended death.

“The Maui Police Department sends its deepest condolences to Ms. Giuliano’s family and friends,” MPD said in a news release.
