Universal’s ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Live-Action Adaptation Casts Mason Thames and Nico Parker

Mason Thames and Nico Parker set to star as Hiccup and Astrid in Universal’s new live-action adaptation from DreamWorks Animation How to train your dragon. Dean DeBlois directs the picture with the film which will take place on March 14, 2025.

The new live-action adaptation will immerse audiences in the imaginative tradition of DreamWorks Animation. Working from a single narrative tapestry, the amazing adventures of Hiccup and Toothless have captivated fans across three blockbuster movies, which have grossed over $1.6 billion.

No More Deadline

DreamWorks Animation’s original animated epic premiered, fans were captivated by the unlikely friendship of a teenage Viking and a fearsome dragon Night Fury and the amazing adventures of Hiccup and Toothless. The franchise was hailed with four Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe Award for the second filmed chapter. The franchise is based on the best-selling book series by Cressida Cowell, with Deblois also writing and Marc Platt producing for Marc Platt Productions alongside Adam Siegel, president of Marc Platt Productions. Vice President of Production Development Lexi Barta will oversee the film on behalf of the studio.

Thames has just completed his role in Universal’s The black phone alongside Ethan Hawke. He continued with the lead role in the feature film Artists Road / Spyglass incoming. Directed by Dave and John Chernin, the comedy follows four freshmen as they navigate the terrors of adolescence at their very first high school party. Thames will next be seen alongside Oscar-winning actor and director Mel Gibson in summer boys. Thames is represented by WME, Brillstein Entertainment and Goodman Genow Schenkman.

Parker can currently be seen on HBO’s record-breaking series, The last of us in front of Pedro Pascal. She will next be seen alongside Woody Harrelson and Laura Linney in Laura Chinn’s feature filmcoast of the sun which will be published by Searchlight. Her acting debut was starring in Tim Burton’s live-action adaptation of Dumbowhich was released by Disney, and she recently starred in the HBO television series, The third day opposite Jude Law and Naomie Harris. Parker is replaced by Curtis Brown and WME.
