The Yankees won their second straight game and their fifth in their last seven games with an 8-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Independence Day.

Here are the takeaways…

– After a 35-minute rain delay, slightly ruined July 4 festivities in the Bronx, Gleyber Torres wasted no time in launching the first fireworks for the Yanks, snatching a two-point shot in the first inning Kyle Gibson which gave New York a 2-0 lead.

Torres went 2 for 4 in second place on the lineup with one home run, one double, one walk, two RBIs and three runs scored and now has 13 home runs this season to go along with 36 RBIs.

– After a first double by Ryan O’Hearn in the second round, Clarke Schmidt and Gibson traded outs until round four when Jake Bauer started with a walk, followed by a one-shot for Harrison Bader. From there, the Yankees fabricated a run through Antoine Volpe‘s groundout which propelled the runners to second and third and Isiah Kiner-Falefa‘s sacrifice fly.

– The Orioles responded in the next half-inning and a familiar face started things off. With an out, Aaron Hicks threw a solo home run on the right-center field that just went over the wall and put the birds on the board.

Jordan Westburg then hit a double left field that Oswaldo Cabrera misinterpreted, by breaking in on a ball that went over his head. The next batter, Adam Fraziermade Cabrera and Schmidt pay by going deep almost to the exact spot where Hicks hit his home run that tied the game at three.

Schmidt ended the inning and left the game in sixth after allowing a first hit. He allowed three earned runs on five hits, including those two homers, no walks and seven strikeouts.

– The game didn’t stay tied for long, however, as the Yanks regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth on Giancarlo StantonThe single of that led Torres from first base thanks to one-on-one running and nonchalant play by the O’s.

– Take over from Schmidt in sixth, Ron Marinaccio got into trouble after walking two batters to load the bases. The Toms River native escaped the jam by flying Westburg to finish the frame.

Jose Trevino added some late fireworks to the party with his solo shot in the seventh inning that gave the Yanks a two-run cushion. Then, with the bases loaded, Bader hit a two-run brace that opened this one up and made it 7-3.

– New York added a run in the eighth and Baltimore had a run in the ninth Albert Abreu as the Bombers won Game 2 of their four-game series with their division rivals.
