The Yankees selected the shortstop George Lombard Jr. with the No. 26 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.
The 18-year-old from Pinecrest, Florida has committed to play at Vanderbilt University, but many expect him to sign and start his professional career.
Lombard comes to the Bronx with big league bloodlines as he is the son of the current Detroit Tigers batting coach and former MLB outfielder. George Lombard.
The youngster was ranked the 31st overall MLB Pipeline prospect heading into the draft. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, he boasts a ton of raw pop and has the potential to be an above-average bat on the right side of the plate.
During his senior year at Gulliver Prep High School, Lombard hit .512 with six home runs, 14 doubles and 24 RBIs. He was also a state football champion and was named Miami-Dade Athlete of the Year.
Last high school player selected by Yankees in first round was top prospect and current shortstop Antoine Volpe back in the 2019 draft.
New York only picks once Sunday night, but they have a total of 18 picks in the draft.
