Kevin De Bruyne has insisted Saturday’s Champions League final result against Inter Milan will not be career defining – but he is desperate for a happier experience than he did two years ago.

De Bruyne fractured his nose and eye socket after a clash with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in the 2021 European Cup final in Porto.

“It’s football,” De Bruyne said of the 2021 final. “I’ve never broken anything in my life and I’m coming out of the Champions League final with a broken nose, a broken eye socket and a concussion. It happens. I can’t do anything more. I wish it was better, but it wasn’t.

Asked if City need to win the European Cup to be remembered as a great team, De Bruyne added: “Most of the guys have been amazing anyway. Will that help? Yes “But 90 minutes doesn’t define a career. I’m on about 700 games. 90 minutes out of 700 doesn’t define my career. But obviously it helps.

“There was belief anyway [City could win the treble] but it was not worth talking about before. We know now. I want to win the Champions League and I want to win the treble but we were about to win the game [against United]. We should enjoy next week and hopefully we can do our best.
