We’re going to have to wait a bit longer to crack another case with True Detective: HBO has delayed Season 4 of the crime anthology until next year. A source confirms to TVLine that the premiere date has been shifted to January.
The upcoming fourth season, dubbed True Detective: Night Country and starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, was originally scheduled to debut later this year and was included in a sizzle reel of Max’s 2023 programming slate, with a teaser trailer saying it was “coming this year.” But HBO’s official website now says it’s coming in 2024, with the date change quietly being made earlier this month. (A number of TV shows have been pushed back due to the ongoing Hollywood writers and actors strikes, which mean the stars and writers can’t promote their projects.)

Night Country stars Foster and Reis as a pair of Alaska detectives who are put on the case when eight men who operate an local arctic research station disappear without a trace. “To solve the case,” the detectives “will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice,” per the official description.
Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) will serve as writer, director and showrunner, with Oscar winner Barry Jenkins (The Underground Railroad) on board as an executive producer. (Series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who wrote or co-wrote every episode of the previous three seasons, will not be creatively involved in Season 4 but still retains an EP credit.) True Detective last aired in 2019, with Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff leading the Season 3 cast.
