British tennis suffered one of its worst Wimbledons of the 21st century, after Katie Boulter was knocked out of the tournament to end hopes of home interest in week two.
A supportive crowd on center court offered Boulter vocal encouragement, but could not save her from dismemberment at the hands of defending champion Elena Rybakina. Rybakina served seven aces in a routine 6-1, 6-1 win.
The result dealt another blow to the reputation of the Lawn Tennis Association, the governing body which receives a grant of around £40m a year from the Wimbledon surplus.
It was only the fourth time in the 21st century that no Briton had reached the second week of Wimbledon. The same was true in 2018 – the year after Murray’s original hip fracture – as well as in 2007 and 2005.
