The Boston Red Sox announced on Sunday that former pitcher Tim Wakefield has died. He was 57.

The announcement of Wakefield’s death comes just days after the Red Sox released a statement revealing that Wakefield was currently in treatment for an unspecified disease.

Wakefield, who made his MLB debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992, spent 19 years in MLB. His final 17 years were spent with the Red Sox, and Wakefield would go on to work for them as a special assistant and broadcaster after his retirement in 2011.
