Shooting at party on West Trade Street kills one person, suspect arrested

A man was shot and killed in northwest Charlotte on Sunday morning, and police believe the shooting happened during a party.

CMPD says they responded to a shots fired call on the 2700 block of West Trade Street just before 5 a.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, they found Avyon Titus Thomas, 17, a gunshot wound inside a residence. MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene. Myers Park High School posted on Facebook that Thomas was a student at the school.

“We are deeply saddened to share that Avyon Thomas, a senior here at our school, died early this morning while at a gathering. His passing is a tragedy. Avyon was a loyal friend to his peers and a caring and loving child. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Avyon’s mother, grandmother, family, and friends,” the statement read.

The incident happened just off of Brookshire Freeway. Channel 9′s photographer said police were set up outside of townhomes at the ABODE at Greenway.

CMPD is investigating the death as a homicide. Jamir Easter, 18, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and turned himself into police.

Channel 9′s photographer said he saw one person being taken into custody and placed in a patrol car, but the man was later released. Neighbors told Reporter Glenn Counts the home where the shooting happened is often used as a rental.
