Sexual battery charge among 13 indictments

July 6 – A Crossville man was arrested by city police last week in a sealed indictment on April 24 charging aggravated sexual assault in a case investigated by that department.

Joshua Clay Smith was taken into custody last week on the single count indictment.

The document accuses Smith of having “intentionally, knowingly and unlawfully engaged in sexual contact” with the victim under the age of 13.

The victim is, according to the indictment, 9 years old.

The witnesses listed on the indictment are Det. JC Hancock, Lt. Jonathan O’Neal and the victim.

No other load information is available.

Smith and those charged June 26 will appear in Cumberland County Criminal Court at 9 a.m. Monday for arraignment (reading/first appearances).

An indictment is not a conviction, but a review of the pending charges by a panel of citizens called the grand jury who hear the evidence and determine that there is enough evidence to forward the charge to a higher court for further judicial review.
