The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ iconic “Creamsicle” uniforms will return against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, October 15. This will be fans’ first glimpse of their retro favorite for the first time in over 10 years.

The Buccaneers will face a familiar opponent in the Nostalgic Game in Week 6. The Lions and Buccaneers have faced each other for years in the NFC Central Division. The team’s first playoff game in 14 years was a Wildcard victory over the Lions at the end of the 1997 season, although they then switched to their current colours. Both teams were part of the division until 2001.

The Buccaneers wore the “Florida orange” and white combination when they entered the league as an expansion team in 1976. They kept these uniforms until 1996 when the team moved to the pewter, white and red soon after the Glazer family took possession.

After the change, the team would still wear the throwback uniforms once a year from 2009 to 2012. Since the set includes white helmets and the Bucco Bruce logo, its yearly resurgence came to a halt when the NFL demanded players wear the same helmet throughout the season.

Some might say that the old uniforms represent an era of losing football for the team, which is true. The Buccaneers have lost their first 26 games in the beloved colors. They then made back-to-back playoff appearances in the early 80s and struggled to return to the playoffs until their rebranding.

Fans likely have recent positive memories of the uniform revival. When the team first brought them back in 2009, they won their first game of the season. Starting the year 0-8, Tampa Bay picked up a 38-28 win over the Green Bay Packers.

The unique uniform suit was scheduled to be relaunched in 2022, which was delayed due to global supply issues. The team teased the return of 2023 in Apriland now it’s on the horizon.

“More than a throwback game”

The Buccaneers aren’t just bringing back the old uniforms. They planned a “full Creamsicle experience” for the October game, to celebrate nearly 50 years of franchise history.

“This is more than a throwback game; it’s a celebration of our heritage and some of the great moments and players that make our story so special for our fans,” said Brian Ford, COO of Buccaneers.

The team set the tone for the commemoration with a retro promo video:

As part of this effort, the organization will transform Raymond James Stadium with retro pitch stencils, stadium decorations and video map effects. The environment will nod to the team’s founding home grounds at Tampa Stadium, also known as “The Big Sombrero.”
