Nine people were injured in a shooting in a downtown Cleveland nightlife neighborhood early Sunday morning, police said.
One person was seriously injured, according to Cleveland Police Chief Wayne Drummond. The other eight victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
No suspects have been arrested in this case. Police believe there was only one shooter.
The gunfire erupted around 2:30 a.m. in Cleveland’s warehouse district, a popular Saturday night spot full of bars and clubs.
Investigators believe the bullets were fired at a group of people standing in the street shortly after bars closed. Seven men and two women were shot, all between the ages of 23 and 38, according to Drummond.
“This is yet another tragic incident of senseless gun violence in our city,” Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb said in a statement.
“We continue to see an increase in shootings in our city since Republican lawmakers passed Senate Bill 215 last year allowing unlicensed transportation. It is important that we recognize this and hold these legislators accountable for passing dangerous gun laws in our state.
Elsewhere in Cleveland, one person was killed and four others injured in various shootings across the city from Saturday night through Sunday morning, local Fox affiliate WJW reported.
“Safety is our number one priority and we remain committed to doing everything we can to make sure everyone – residents, workers and visitors – feel safe in our city,” Bibb said in the statement.
In the United States, there were 368 mass shootings in 2023, according to Gun Violence Archive. It counts every shootout in which four or more people are injured or killed, excluding the shooter.
