Pegula in form in last eight

Jessica Pegula enjoyed one of those barely believable days at Wimbledon as her racket oozed winners left, right and center in a 6-1, 6-3 fourth-round destruction of hapless Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko.

Tsurenko found herself slapping her thighs and talking animatedly into her racket, but no matter what she tried, it seemed her game had slipped into a terminal coma.

Pegula took full advantage of her opponent’s woes as she thumped thunderous winners from the baseline to take a 5-0 lead in a blinding 18 minutes.

Perhaps still feeling the effects of the colossal effort she put in to defeat Ana Bogdan in the previous round, when Tsurenko won the longest women’s singles tiebreaker (20-18 in the third set) in slam in the open era, the Ukrainian could not do anything. to stop Pegula’s charge on fire.

celebrity watch

By Chris Bascombe

It’s easy to spot celebrities looking at Center Court’s Royal Box, but it’s more fun to identify underage celebrities strolling the SW19 pitch, like former Scotland (and Birmingham & Aston Villa) manager Alex McLeish.

He was around court 12 when his compatriot Jamie Murray won in doubles. McLeish’s chances of being a VIP guest in the future could hinge on Sir Alex Ferguson’s request to roll out the red carpet for the Aberdeen side in the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

“Dimitrov in great shape”

By Chris Bascombe

Anyone who walked past Court 2 earlier had to keep their eyes on the sky as crowd favorite Frances Tiafoe was involved in some high-class whims. Heading for a hammering from Grigor Dimitrov, the tenth seed received a ball from the ballerina to dismiss it by smashing it past the stand.

Unfortunately for him, it turned out to be one of his most memorable strikes in a disappointing outing, with Dimitrov in fine form.

“Wimbledon has a new star”

By Fiona Tomas on Court 3

What a fairy tale run Mirra Andreeva is enjoying at the All England Club. The 16-year-old qualifier couldn’t quite believe what she had done after Anastasia Potapova volleyed into the net as the teenager picked up the biggest win of her budding career. It was only his sixth game on grass.

Instead of returning to the court to soak it all up, Andreeva walked to her seat and buried her face in her towel, visibly overwhelmed with emotion. She received a standing ovation as she left Court 3. Wimbledon has a new star.

Seventh day at Wimbledon

Hello and welcome to Middle Sunday at Wimbledon as a host of stars seek to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek are the headliners on center court while Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka go head-to-head on court 1.

The political significance of this game is huge with a Ukrainian playing against a Belarusian player.

At Roland-Garros, Svitolina beat two Russian players before falling to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals. She was booed in Paris for sticking to Ukraine’s position of not shaking hands with opponents of the two countries because of the ongoing war.

And Svitolina is well aware of what this match means, saying: “A lot of Ukrainians are going to watch, are going to support me. I’m going to go out there and put on the fighting spirit and really fight for every point.

Azarenka, however, said she was happy for Svitolina after having a baby and returned to court.

“I’m so happy for her to have had this incredible experience, to have this incredible experience of having a family and being able to get back on tour very quickly,” she said.

“(She has) already returned to her game at a very high level…I can’t speak for her but it looks like she is playing with less pressure.”

Djokovic takes on 17th-seeded Hubert Hurkacz, who is 0-5 against the seven-time champion. They will play at the Center, where Djokovic has not lost since July 7, 2013, in the final against Andy Murray.

Hurkacz of Poland didn’t lose serve in three wins at this year’s tournament, all in straight sets. They have met once before at the All England Club, in the third round in 2019 with Djokovic winning in four sets.

“He’s very comfortable playing on grass,” Djokovic said of Hurkacz. “He beat Federer here a few years ago. He’s a player who doesn’t hesitate to play in a big stadium.
