Iran on Saturday executed two men it accused of carrying out a deadly attack on a shrine in Shiraz in October 2022, according to the official IRNA news agency.
Iran’s Supreme Court rejected an appeal against the two men, Mohammed Ramez Rashidi and Sayed Naeem Hashemi Qatali, IRNA quoted the chief prosecutor of Fars province as saying.
Thirteen people were killed and 40 others injured in the attack that took place at the Shahcheragh shrine in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz on October 26, 2022, according to IRNA.
The attack took place on a Wednesday evening, one of the busiest times at the sanctuary.
At the time, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack and issued a statement on its affiliate news agency Amaq saying that one of its operatives “targeted groups of Sunni infidels inside from the shrine with his machine gun, causing the death of dozens of them”.
The attack came the same day as clashes erupted across the country to mark 40 days since the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being taken to a ‘re-education centre’ for not wearing her hijab properly. It is unclear whether the attack was linked to the protests.
Protests have swept across the Islamic Republic following the death of the 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish girl.
