UNITED NATIONS (AP) – The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said Thursday it is investigating new alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan’s West Darfur region during the ongoing conflict that has killed and displaced thousands of people.
Karim Khan told the UN Security Council that fighting between government forces and paramilitary Rapid Security Forces spilled over into Darfur where war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed in 2003. He said the country is now “in danger of letting history repeat itself”. “Khan said.
In 2005, the Security Council referred the situation in Darfur to the ICC and Khan said the court still had a mandate under that measure to investigate the crimes. He said people in the vast region feared for their lives amid the conflict and with their homes ablaze.
