Hawks G Dejounte Murray agrees to $120m 4-year extension after 1 season with team

The Atlanta Hawks apparently liked what they saw from Dejounte Murray.

Murray and the Hawks are finalizing a four-year, $120 million maximum extension with a player option after his first season with the team, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Murray was heading into the final season of the four-year, $64 million deal he signed with the San Antonio Spurs, in which he held a cap of $18.2 million for 2023-24.

The Hawks acquired Murray in a blockbuster trade last offseason, parting with three first-round picks and a pick trade for the All-Star guard. The move gave star point guard Trae Young a backcourt counterpart with significant defensive bonafide, something Young admittedly lacked, and another player the offense could pass through.

Murray held his end of the bargain, though that didn’t stop a tough season for Atlanta. Murray averaged 20.5 points, 6.1 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 34.4 percent from 3-point range for the 41-41 Hawks. His first season ended with a first-round outing against the Boston Celtics following a playoff win over the Miami Heat.

Murray has remained an obvious member of the Hawks’ core, despite those struggles, and now it looks like he’ll be sticking around for the foreseeable future.
