Fayetteville man jailed on murder charge in slaying on Schmidt Street on Monday

A man accused of a fatal shooting in Fayetteville on Monday afternoon was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Jeavon Jquon McCoy, 18, of the 4900 block of Galveston Drive, Fayetteville, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Joseph Walton, 37, according to a Fayetteville Police Department news release. Walton was found dead in the road about 4 p.m. in the 4900 block of Schmidt Street off Bragg Boulevard, the release said.

Investigators requested the public’s help in finding McCoy and another man believed to be involved in Walton’s death, releasing two sets of photos showing McCoy and the other man on Schmidt Street and in what appeared to be a convenience store.

In the pictures, the unidentified man is wearing a reddish-orange T-shirt with a blue Nike logo, distressed jeans and a blue paisley-print bandana on his head. Investigators believe he has information about Walton’s killing, according to the news release.

McCoy was arrested at 11:41 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of Johnson Street. He is being held in the Cumberland County jail without bail.
