“I thought it was only going to last one season,” laughs Eric André.

On Sunday, however, The Eric André show – the comedian’s anarchic and satirical take on late-night talk shows rolled out the first episode of its sixth season.

Like the 50 twisted episodes (and three specials) that preceded it on Cartoon Network Adult Swim’s adult-oriented programming block, the episode is equal parts surreal, absurd, shocking, hilarious, and deeply uncomfortable. He destroys his set, uses a bat to beat up a man dressed as a prince, asks guest Lil Nas X when the last time his mother had sex was and, while posing as a pest control, pranks an office worker by having a toddler bug crash through the wall.

Future episodes will bring a very restless Daymond John (from shark tank fame, and whom André calls one of his favorite guests) and a very unstable Jaleel White, who nervously tugs on a vape pen as things get weirder and weirder around him. “He likes marijuana, nothing wrong with that,” Andre says of actor best known for playing Steve Urkel on favorite 90s sitcom Family matters. “He was stoned. He was shaken. (Watch our full interview below.)

Other guests this season will include Donald Glover, Jon Hamm, Jaden Smith, Megan Good, Mia Khalifa and Chet Hanks. We can’t tell you if any of them come out, like Lauren Conrad did in Season 3 (after Andre apparently ate his own vomit) and TI in Season 4 after a man went out without pants (or underwear). André says that other former guests, namely Tichina Arnold, Robin Givens and Tia Carrera, “got back to the moon a bit slowly. Technically it wasn’t a walkout, but it was a walk to the exit. (The show’s booking trick? Guests aren’t usually told about the interview that’s about to take place in their press circuit.)

Gone this year is co-host Hannibal Buress, who left during Season 5. Another big difference: yet another jarring body modification for Andre, 40. It’s all part of the crazy aesthetic of the series. The host lost a lot of weight for season 4 and gained over 40 pounds for season 5. So for season 6, as the show’s press release proclaims, Andre got “ripped and shred, with taut nips and a scintillating six-pack”. abs.” He also sports a new slicked-back ponytail.

Andre shows off his new body often and early on during the show, but the internet got a glimpse of his new physique months ago via a published NSFW photo of him and his girlfriend Emily Ratajkowski.

He doesn’t really want to talk about how their short-lived couple took the tabloids by storm, but he’ll tell you how bad it is to tone up.

“I’ll never do it again,” he says of the body modifications. “They are all a nightmare and they are all horrible for you. Even this one, which was the healthiest. Anyone over 22 who has abs is a psychopath. Or unemployed. It takes so much work and effort to see your abs. For a man, seeing his abs is a full-time job. I mean, it’s amazing. You must be obsessed on a psychotic level.

The comedian has not seen his abs very long.

“As soon as I was done, I went to Prince Street Pizza [in Manhattan] and ate a whole pizza, fell asleep, woke up and ate like three bagels. It’s no exaggeration,” he says. “And then I went on a drink bender. The craziest bender of my life. Like, a lost week ago from my memory. … Then I forgot that I had made a trip to Portugal with my friends. We went to Portugal and drank our weight in wine. Then I came back, and it was only a few weeks after we were done. I stepped on the scale and had regained my full weight. What took me like six months to get [down] took me about four weeks to put on. And then I was like, ‘F**k it, man. I am an actor. I don’t need to be in shape.

Shortly after this long stupidity, a friend informed André that he had been expelled from Saturday Night Live. It wasn’t entirely true, but he’s still putting the pieces together and had a revelation during our interview.

From the information we gathered, the date was May 14, 2022. Selena Gomez was hosting SNLwith Post Malone as musical guest.

“I was drinking hurricanes all day. And they call them slurricanes for a reason,” he says. “[SNL player] Sarah Sherman bought me tickets. And then I came and I’m sitting in the audience and my stomach started [to hurt]. I thought I was going to vomit. And I don’t know if you’ve been to a taping, but the seats are very close together. So my stomach was like a washing machine and I was like, ‘F**k, I can’t puke Saturday Night Live. Like, I mean no disrespect. So I looked at my date and was like, ‘We have to go, we have to go now.’ And I ran outside and got some fresh air and then I went to a halal cart and just ate about 10 pounds of halal meat. And then I felt good.

“But it was a mess. My therapist and I have been talking about it for months.

No doubt some of the unsuspecting guests The Eric André show felt.

New episodes of The Eric André show premiere Sundays at midnight on Adult Swim.
