Conor McGregor’s punch reportedly sent Heat mascot to the ER after promo sketch went wrong

The Miami Heat signed up their mascot to take a punch from Conor McGregor during an NBA Finals game. Like their team’s effort against the Denver Nuggets on Friday, it apparently didn’t end well.

The man who plays mascot Heat Burnie was taken to the emergency room of a nearby hospital after being punched by the former UFC champion during an in-game promotional skit, according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick. The man is said to be fine after being given painkillers and being sent home.

The incident happened in the third quarter of Game 4. McGregor, who was promoting painkiller spray, faced Burnie while the mascot was in boxing gear, then leveled him with a left hook to the head. McGregor followed that up with another punch to the head as Burnie lay on the ground, then hit him with the painkiller spray.

Burnie was then taken away by members of Heat staff.

It’s unclear if McGregor will face any consequences or liability issues for what appeared to be a pre-rehearsal skit gone wrong at his own hand. At the very least, that’s not a good sign for the effectiveness of his painkiller spray.

The incident is McGregor’s second known knockout since 2016, a period in which he fought only four times in the UFC with a win over aging Donald Cerrone. McGregor hasn’t fought since a disastrous rematch against Dustin Poirier in which he broke his shin in the first round.

McGregor is currently set to take on popular lightweight Michael Chandler after training with him on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’.

The Heat’s game against the Nuggets went a little better, but not well enough to avoid a 3-1 hole in the NBA Finals. The series returns to Denver, with the Nuggets playing to clinch their first NBA championship on Monday.
