Quote: “I just spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. I thanked him for inviting me to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and told him that I could not visit Russia at the moment , but I reiterated Brazil’s readiness, along with India, Indonesia and China, to negotiate with both parties to the conflict in search of peace.”
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has repeatedly been accused of being too friendly with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He made the statement after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Brazil.
The White House strongly criticized Brazil after its president’s statement.
In early April, Silva suggested that Ukraine give up Crimea to end the war. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded by saying that Ukraine was not exchanging its territories.
