4-month manhunt ends with couple arrested on child abuse charges, says CMPD

The couple accused of child abuse were jailed in Mecklenburg County Jail after four months on the run.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested the couple wanted in a child abuse case beginning March 20.

Brandon Augustine and Mildred Chestnut, who are accused of abusing their four-month-old son, were taken into Mint Hill police custody around 8 p.m. Thursday, the CMPD said.

Augustine, 25, and Chestnut, 23, were transported to Uptown Charlotte for questioning by detectives before being charged with felony child abuse causing serious bodily harm.

In March, the baby was taken to Atrium Health Main with serious injuries. Officers learned that the child had been injured in an accident, but these injuries were not consistent with this type of trauma.

The couple then left him there and Atrium Health contacted the police.

Warrants were issued for Augustine and Chestnut.

The search for the couple sent police to Georgia in March when the couple’s car was spotted.

The CMPD attributed the success of the arrests to the collaboration of several agencies, including the United States Secret Service, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and agencies from other states.

The investigation into the case is ongoing. If you have any information related to the case, contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
