JOHANNESBURG (AP) — At least 16 people, including three children, have died in a poison gas leak in South Africa, police said Wednesday.
Emergency services said as many as 24 people had died.
It was not immediately clear why there was a difference in the death toll.
The incident happened in an informal settlement in the town of Boksburg, on the eastern outskirts of Johannesburg, South African police services said. According to the police, two people were taken to hospital for treatment.
Emergency services spokesman William Ntladi said the gas leak had stopped and crews were searching a 100-metre (100-yard) radius around the gas cylinder to search for other victims .
