13 family members die in Namibia after eating poisonous porridge, reports say

WINDHOEK, Namibia (AP) — Thirteen members of a family have died in Namibia after eating porridge that authorities say became toxic when mixed with a leftover fermented substance from an alcoholic beverage made house, the public television channel reported.

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation said four other people were in critical condition in hospital. NBC, citing Namibia’s health ministry, said at least 20 people consumed the “poisonous or poisonous” porridge after mixing it with the sediment from a craft beer.

The victims ranged in age from 2 to 33, NBC said.

The incident took place in the Kavango Est region, in the far northeast of the country.
